Amy Magan 4th Frog Interview

Q: Has building community always been important to you? How did you do that before you started the blog?

A: I’m not sure I’ve always thought in terms of “community,” but I have always been interested in making connections between people. In high school, I was one of those kids who moved in and out of the various social groups pretty easily — though I never felt confident enough to go beyond the fringe of the really popular kids. I was part of a sorority in college (shout out to Delta Gamma) and really searched with my husband to find a church that was more than just a place to spend an hour on Sundays. Our family social circle was made up of other families I met through our parish’s Mom’s group. That was really a lifeline in those early parenting days. Speaking of family — I am so lucky to be part of a big and close family. I’m the oldest of 5 and I have 40+ cousins. One reason I love Facebook (and I do!) is because it lets me stay connected to cousins who I wouldn’t have a chance to see and talk to often otherwise.

As I’ve gotten older, the idea of staying connected and in community is still important to me. One of the hardest things about having older kids is that as moms we’re pulled in so many different directions, getting kids from school to activities, etc. It makes spending time with other adults who are important to us (spouses and friends) harder to coordinate. But it’s still so important to work at making it happen!

Q: How has blogging changed your own parenting?

A: When I started blogging over 3 years ago (July 2008), my kids were excited to be part of my blog. They would ask with excited anticipation if I was going to blog about them. As they’ve gotten older (read: tweens and teens), they say “You’re not gonna blog about this are you?” The transition has made me think about the desire and right of my kids to have some say about how their life stories are told. Oh, I still write things they don’t love. But the really embarrassing stuff, I keep to myself!

Blogging is more than just writing about your own life. Being part of the blogosphere is about being part of community. I’ve gotten some good perspective from moms whose blogs I read. Two who come to mind are Dawn at Momza’s House <http://momza.blogspot.com/> and Liz at Eternal Lizdom <http://www.eternallizdom.com> .

Q: What is the most valuable piece of advice other people who visit your blog have given to you?

A: Hmmm…that’s a tough one. I think what I value most is when people are honest in their reactions to what I have to say. Whether they agree with me or not, whether they understand me or not, I want to hear what they really think.

Q: When was the last time you were able to sit down and have a really good talk with someone in person?

A: About 3 weeks ago, I had a terrific talk with my soon-to-be 15 year old daughter. So often, we are together long enough to remind each other about chores that need to be done or what time she needs to be picked up from theater. But we just happened to have time to really enjoy each other’s company. We didn’t have any real deep conversation, but it was one of those opportunities for me to be reminded of who she is as a person — a really great kid!

Q: What are your goals for 2012? Any New Year’s resolutions?

A: I don’t make resolutions because I don’t want to ‘fess up to having dropped them. One thing I need to do this year is get control of my health. It’s an ongoing struggle — I’m not just a yo-yo dieter, I’m a bungee jumping dieter. But I’m taking one step at a time to move in the right direction. I’ve been selective about sharing it on the blog because at this point, readers who’ve been with me for a long time might think, “here we go again…”

I did join a book club that I’m really excited about. I used to read a lot but have fallen out of the habit, so I’m excited about the book club. Plus, the other women in the club are women I am familiar with, but don’t know very well. So it’s a chance to further build those connections.
