The Tao of Pooh

ONE OF MY TOP 5 FAVORITE BOOKS,  Benjamin Hoff’s classic,  THE TAO OF POOH, and the companion text, THE TE OF PIGLET, illuminates the key concepts of Taoism through the Winnie the Pooh characters.  His relaxed, conversational style fits one of the main principles of Taoism, we wei wu wei, or “effortless doing”, and pu, the concept of being open to all of life’s experiences, but unburdened by them.

If you are looking for a non-traditional spiritual text to enjoy this Sunday (or anytime you want a spiritual shot in the arm), check out this oldie but goodie.  If you’ve never read it, you’re in for a treat!

Benjamin Hoff himself, if he were a book, would be an interesting read.  A product of free-thinking Oregon towns and universities, he mastered everything from the Japanese tea ceremony to Qigong and Tai Chi.  A Jack of all trades, he worked as a tree pruner, antiques restorer, hospital orderly, investigative reporter, photojournalist, recording musician, singer, and songwriter.  In 2006, he renounced the book publishing business in an essay titled “Farewell to Authorship”.

I’m just glad he wrote what he did and we get to enjoy the books he did write and publish.
